Bee Keeper Visit

Adi and Sender prepare for the visit by reading a book with Morah Laurie about how bees make honey.

First, beekeeper Hava showed us how bees talk to each other, and what they are trying to say. We tried talking to each other by dancing like bees! "I found a new home, I found a new home!"

Some dead bees found near the hive.

Wow, check out that honeycomb...

A beekeepers suit needs to protect from stings.

We got to try on some beekeeping gear!

There were so many tools a beekeeper uses to take care of the bees and harvest the honey...

Hava even showed us how a smoker works!

But that smoke didn't make us sleepy.

We all got a chance to hold the smoker before Hava lit it.

Rosh Hashanah Fun!

We were all so surprised when Morah Chava opened up the "apple"! Silly Morah! That's not an apple!

Maya inspects a seed. It was really tricky to get the seeds out of the pomegranite with the tongs. We got to work on our fine motor skills.

There were so many seeds - just like all the mitzvahs that we do! Rosie found so many.

Apples are another food that we eat on Rosh Hashanah. We had lots of fun using apples as stampers with fall colors on the easel.

Morah Chava showed us how to cut up an apple to prepare a yummy Rosh Hashanah snack...

...with honey on top! We had to be really careful with the honey dipper stick so as not to drip any honey.

It's lots of fun to work carefully to prepare a snack. Josie offered apple slices to her friends.

Many of the sliced apples went into the crockpot. We weren't sure if the apples would get hard or soft when they got hot.

Morah Laurie showed us that they got soft! We made applesauce! Ben liked his applesauce with cinnamon and honey.

"Dip the apple in the honey
Make a bracha loud and clear
L'shana Tova U'mesuka
have a happy sweet new year!"
Our Rosh Hashanah rock band really rocked!

Sammy gets ready to blow his "shofar." Our homemade shofars weren't real, but they were NOISY!!

Sorting apples by "small," "medium" and "large."

Apple "picking"

Carefully, carefully follow the round challah shape...

...to make a round play-doh "challah" for Rosh Hashanah!

We couldn't wait to taste some real challah.

Kids in the classroom...

Circle time!

Future preschoolers...

Meet the teachers:

Morah Laurie is very excited to work with the children in our small preschool. With over a decade of experience in the preschool classroom (along with a bachelors in sociology and a teaching certificate), Morah Laurie has lots to share with us!

Mushkie, Rabbi Cheski's sister, is anticipating an exciting year. She looks forward to learning a lot from the kids!

Morah Chava is thrilled to have the opportunity to be in the classroom with the children for a third year. It is so exciting to see how the preschoolers have grown!

Welcome to our classroom!

September and Rosh Hashanah Pictures

A little belated, but just as cute!

Happy faces to start a new year!

Tasting sweet honey for a sweet new year...

Tastes sweet!

The vinegar was not nearly as tasty.

It got quite a few bad reviews. We didn't want a year like vinegar.

We made some Rosh Hashanah cards for our families wishing them a year like honey!
(if you know how to flip pictures on blogger so you don't have to crane your neck, let me know!)
